One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners across Granada Hills, Porter Ranch, and the rest of the San Fernando Valley is simple: “Should I fix this thing or just buy a new one?”
After 36 years and more than 50,000 repairs, here is the honest framework we use to help our customers make that decision.
The 50% Rule
The most reliable guideline is what we call the 50% rule: if the repair costs more than 50% of what a comparable new appliance would cost, replacement usually makes more sense. But there are important exceptions.
When Repair Is Almost Always Worth It
- The appliance is less than 5 years old. Modern appliances should last 10 to 15 years. If yours is relatively new, the repair is almost certainly cheaper than replacing it, and you have plenty of useful life left.
- The problem is a common, inexpensive fix. A blown thermal fuse in a dryer ($150-$200), a faulty ice maker ($200-$300), or a broken dishwasher door latch ($100-$175) — these are straightforward repairs that will keep your appliance running for years.
- It is a high-end or commercial-grade unit. Sub-Zero, Viking, Thermador, and Miele appliances cost $3,000 to $15,000 to replace. Repairing a $400 control board in a $8,000 Sub-Zero is a no-brainer.
When Replacement Makes More Sense
- The appliance is over 10 years old AND the repair exceeds 50% of replacement cost. An older unit is more likely to develop additional problems soon.
- The compressor has failed in a standard refrigerator over 8 years old. Compressor replacements typically run $800 to $1,200 including labor. At that price point, a new refrigerator with a manufacturer’s warranty is often the smarter investment.
- You are seeing repeat failures. If the same appliance has needed two or more major repairs in the past year, the underlying issue may be cumulative wear.
Average Appliance Lifespans
Here is how long you can reasonably expect your appliances to last with normal use:
| Appliance | Average Lifespan |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 13-17 years |
| Washer | 10-14 years |
| Dryer | 13-15 years |
| Dishwasher | 9-12 years |
| Oven/Stove | 15-20 years |
| Microwave | 7-10 years |
If your appliance is well within its expected lifespan and the repair is reasonable, fixing it is almost always the right move.
