Our Story

Alex Sandler grew up in the San Fernando Valley, the son of a building maintenance man who kept every appliance running in a sixty-unit apartment complex in North Hollywood. By the time Alex was fourteen, tenants were calling him directly to fix their washers and dryers because his father taught him well and he had a knack for diagnosing problems by sound alone.

After high school, Alex took a job with a large national appliance warranty company that handled service calls across the Valley. The training was excellent — he earned certifications on every major brand, from Whirlpool and GE to Sub-Zero and Thermador. But the company ran on volume, not quality. Technicians were expected to close eight to ten calls a day. There was no time to explain things to customers, no time to do the job right, and no incentive to try.

“I’d show up at someone’s house and they’d already be frustrated because the last tech rushed through and didn’t fix it,” Alex says. “I’d fix it properly, but then my supervisor would call and ask why I spent 45 minutes on a job that should’ve taken 20. That’s when I knew I had to go out on my own.”

In 1989, Alex took his savings, bought a used Ford Econoline van, loaded it with parts, and started Granada Hills Appliance Repair. His first jobs came from neighbors on Chatsworth Street who already knew his work. His wife handled the books and the phones from their kitchen table. Their first month, they got twelve calls — all word of mouth. By the end of the first year, they were booked solid every week.

Thirty-six years and more than 50,000 completed jobs later, Granada Hills Appliance Repair has grown into a team of six full-time technicians with certifications across every major appliance brand. But Alex still answers his own phone, still goes out on calls, and still won’t let a technician leave a job site until the customer is completely satisfied.

The Team

Alex Sandler — Founder & Lead Technician. 36+ years of hands-on experience. Certified on every major appliance brand including Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking, and Bosch. Still personally handles the trickiest diagnostic calls and trains every new technician himself.

Mike Sandler — Senior Technician and Alex’s son. Grew up riding along on service calls starting at age twelve. Now leads his own crew covering Porter Ranch, Chatsworth, and Woodland Hills. Specializes in refrigeration and cooling systems — factory-trained on Samsung and LG sealed systems.

Danny Reyes — Technician, with the team since 2008. Our washer and dryer specialist, including stackable units. Certified on Speed Queen commercial laundry equipment. Covers Granada Hills, Northridge, and North Hills.

Victor Petrosyan — Technician, joined in 2012. Specializes in ovens, stoves, cooktops, and range hoods. Expert in gas appliance diagnostics and safety. Handles Mission Hills, Sylmar, and Encino calls.

Chris Nguyen — Technician, joined in 2016. Handles dishwashers, microwaves, and general appliance repair across all service areas. Bilingual English/Vietnamese.

Jorge Ramirez — Technician, joined in 2019. Covers Reseda, Tarzana, and West Hills. Specializes in high-end European brands — Miele, Bosch, Thermador. Bilingual English/Spanish.

Our Approach

We do three things differently than the big companies:

1. We diagnose before we quote. Our service call is $85 ($125 for stackable washer/dryers), and we waive it entirely if you go ahead with the repair. We’ll tell you exactly what’s wrong, what it costs to fix, and whether we honestly think the repair is worth it versus replacing the appliance. No pressure, no surprises.

2. We stock common parts on our trucks. Our vans carry the most common failure parts for every major brand. That means about 70% of repairs get completed on the first visit — same day, no waiting two weeks for a part to ship.

3. We guarantee our work. Every repair comes with a 30-day labor warranty and 90-day parts warranty. If the same issue comes back within that window, we come back and fix it at no charge. Period.
